Topchubashov Center, IDM hold joint panel discussion, sign MoU

On 3 July 2026, Topchubashov Center and the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM) jointly hosted a panel discussion in Vienna titled "The South Caucasus in Transition: Connectivity, Regional Cooperation, and European Perspectives." The event brought together experts and policymakers to exchange views on the evolving geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus and its growing relevance for Central Europe.

The discussion explored the profound transformations taking place across the South Caucasus, with participants examining regional security dynamics, connectivity initiatives, shifting geopolitical realities, and prospects for deeper engagement between the region and Europe. Panelists also reflected on developments in Central Europe, highlighting both the similarities and differences between the two regions, as well as their shared challenges and opportunities for cooperation.

A key theme throughout the discussion was the importance of strengthening dialogue and practical cooperation between Central Europe and the South Caucasus. Participants emphasized the strategic significance of connectivity, regional resilience, and people-to-people engagement as essential elements for promoting stability and sustainable development across the wider European neighbourhood.

The panel featured:

  • Rusif Huseynov, Director of the Topchubashov Center;
  • Federica Mangiameli, Senior Programme Manager of the Future of Security Programme at GLOBSEC;
  • Sebastian Schäffer, Director of IDM.

The discussion was moderated by Ninon Bouteloup, Research Associate at IDM, while Friedrich Faulhammer, Chairman of the Board of IDM, delivered the welcome remarks.

The event concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Topchubashov Center and IDM, establishing a framework for long-term institutional cooperation. The agreement aims to foster joint research, policy dialogue, academic exchange, and collaborative initiatives on issues of shared interest, further strengthening ties between the South Caucasus and Central Europe.
